Trail Surface

The trail is mainly made up of crushed limestone. Some portions may have gravel, and a few portions are concrete. The trail is best used by bikes with bigger and grippier tires, such as gravel bikes, mountain bikes, hybrids, and bigger tired eBikes. Road bike cyclists do use the trail at times, but traction could be an issue, especially if the trail is soft or soggy after a good rain.

Trail Access

The trail can be accessed at many points from the various towns along it. In most cases, each town has its own trailhead with adequate parking, restrooms, bike racks, signage, and potable water.

The main access points are:

  • Karnak (southern terminus)
  • Belknap
  • Vienna
  • Tunnel Hill
  • New Burnside
  • Stonefort
  • Carrier Mills
  • Harrisburg (northern terminus)

NOTE: The Tunnel Hill State Trail ends at Feazel Street in Harrisburg. The continuation of the trail through Harrisburg is not part of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources state-managed rail trail. Our organization supports the state portion from Feazel Street south to Karnak (45 miles).
